What am I talking about? I'm talking about adrenaline. Nothing like a good dose of adrenaline to keep you going through out the week. Add that with a healthy measure of dopamine and a smack of endorphins.....boy are you good to go.

But when the feeling wears off you start to feel the soreness of muscles and niggling bruises you pick up. Now that's not the so fun part I tell you.

However I find myself going back for more punishment and pleasure.

Frog Theory

Prices on petrol and sugar has gone up correlates with the decrease in subsidies. The amount is negligable. So they say. How about we try aggregating the number of times the increase has happened over the years. They must have taken a leaf from the "frog theory".

Experiment 1:
A. Boil a pot of water.
B. Wait till water reaches boiling point.
C. Drop frog into boiling water.
D. Frog instinctively jumps out.

Experiment 2:
A. Put frog in pot of water.
B. Start boiling the water.
C. Frog does not realise the increase in temperature and get cooked eventually.

Conclusion:
I don't want to end up like the frog in experiment 2.

An interesting mail I got...

One Sunday morning an old cowboy entered a church just before services were to begin. The old man and his clothes were spotlessly clean -- jeans, a denim shirt and boots, all worn and ragged. In his hand he carried a worn out old hat and an equally well-worn Bible.

The church he entered was in a very upscale and exclusive part of the city. It was the largest and most beautiful church the old cowboy had ever seen. The people of the congregation were all dressed with expensive clothes and jewelry.

As the cowboy took a seat, the others moved away from him. No one greeted, spoke to, or welcomed him. They were all appalled by his appearance and did not attempt to hide it.

As the old cowboy was leaving the church, the preacher approached him and asked the cowboy to do him a favor: "Before you come back here again, have a talk with God and ask him what he thinks would be appropriate attire for worship in church." The old cowboy assured the preacher he would.

The next Sunday, he showed back up for the services wearing the same old jeans, shirt, boots, and hat. Once again, he was completely shunned and ignored. The preacher approached the cowboy and said, "I thought I asked you to speak to God before you came back to our church."

"I did," replied the old cowboy. "If you spoke to God, what did He tell you the proper attire should be for worshipping here?" asked the preacher. "Well, sir, God told me that He didn't have a clue what I should wear.

This was a set meal lunch for 2 which came with rice, fruits (mandarin oranges) and free flow of soft drinks. If not mistaken price was about RM12 per person. Went there with an ex-colleague.

Nice ambiance and the food was really tasty. Drawback was the lousy service. The waitress brought the bill without us asking for it. Before that she was trying to clear our plates even before we finished eating. Was trying her utmost best to shoo us away. Plus the place wasn't even pack. I would have understood if there were people waiting to be seated.

Verdict: First and last time. I don't care how nice the food in an eaterie is if the service sucks.

I think I've come a long way (by my standards), since the days when I used to work in my aunt's bathroom appliance store. If I can recall it correctly, my job designation was receptionist cum accounts executive cum sales executive cum despatch cum over here and get the job done.

This was what I did when I was fresh out of Uni with no prospective employers in sight willing to even give my resume a sniff. So back to the job, it was a mundane routine every day from Monday to Saturday. Work began at 9am to 7pm (or later on some days). I totally dreaded it and I thought to myself if this is what work is and I'm going to be doing this for the rest of my life then Adam really screwed it for me big time when he got himself thrown out of Eden!

Lunch was the only thing I looked forward to everyday. I would trudge to the economy rice stall at the end of the terrace shop to "tapao" my lunch and head back to office to eat. Sundays was spent going to church in the morning and getting home to rest/sleep/tv/internet cafe and psych myself up for the coming week. What a vicious "weekcycle". I was determined to get myself out of this rut.....

The rainy weather greeted me as I stepped out of the Bandar Seri Begawan airport. My boss was going on about how Bruneians have good karma for the sole fact that they were born in Brunei and not in any other part of the world.

I thought to myself what was the big deal. Of course I knew that Brunei is probably the richest country in the world due to its abundant supply of oil and gas. How ignorant I have been! At the end of the trip, I fully comprehended what my boss was relating to. Fun facts about Brunei

1. No income tax no matter how much you earn.

2. Free gas which translates into unlimited cooking.

3. Petrol for only 50 cents a litter. I wouldn't mind driving around the whole of Borneo.

4. Free health care which covers surgery as well.

5. Free education from primary to tertiary.

6. A mercedes C200 compressor cost only Brunei dollar 77k. Lexus about BD 140k+.

7. Population of only 400k. A lot of space available to build houses. No need for major contruction of high rise condos.

need I go on? I think the pain is enough. I'm paying taxes and yet I don't get to enjoy a fraction of the benefits these people are enjoying.

More Ordinary Man's Stories

This morning on the train to work, I finished reading the book entitled "More Ordinary Man's Stories". This book is a compilation of 18 short stories authored by Dr Ong Hwee Keng. It wasn't a thick book and it was made perfect for easy reading for a person on the go. One can relate to all the stories told as it concerns regular joes like you and I. After I turned the final page, it actually left me yearning for more. Such was the level of subtle addictiveness! I wouldn't say that it would make it into the New York Times best seller, but the stories was told in a simple and candid manner but it was also deceptively captivating to the reader.
I wasn't so sure if I would enjoy this book when I bought it a few weeks ago. You see, I was actually "induced" to buy it from a friend during a new year party. His father was the author of the book and all proceeds from the book (which cost RM15) would go to the Serdang Baru Christian Church building fund. It was for a good cause so I had little trouble parting with my money.
I obviously cannot review all the short stories since there are 18 of them! One story however is firmly etched in the recesses of my mind. It is aptly titled "The Pastor". In short, it tells a story about a lady who faced persecution from her family when she converted to Christianity, faced hardship when she became a full-time church worker and subsequently pastor. She died trying to protect the church missionary fund from being taken by robbers. Her life ended abruptly with a parang blow to the head.
This true story left me with the same rhetorical question that has been playing at the back of my mind over and over again..."why does bad things happen to good people". You can re-phrase it also as "why does bad things happen to christians". Where is the justice? Where is the fairness in it all? Why did all the apostles save 1 had to die such grisly death? Why did Stephen get stoned?
How can I as a Christian convince an unbeliever to convert when I have to tell him "Looky here, becoming a Christian is not an insurance policy to a guaranteed good life. Bad things may happen to you along the way. You may even lose your life as a result!" Like it or not that is how the message of salvation should be preached. Hence I fervently believe that the gospel message cannot be sugar coated. It cannot be custom or tailor made to suit someones needs. The gospel needs to be told raw, unadulterated, uncencored and unabridged. The spreading of the gospel should not be like a dishonest salesman selling a product to a customer. In this case the salesman forgets to tell the customer about the "fine prints". Fine prints in this case refers to the cost of following Jesus. New believers that did not count the cost are most likely to fall away from the faith. All because they were not told before hand.
It is time to get real people. Tell the gospel for what it is with all the strings attached. Believe in Jesus, you go to heaven. Don't believe you go to hell. Finito. No more "come-lar to my church, we serve food after service," or "come-lar cos my church got lots of cun chicks". Jesus was direct and straight to the point. Sometime what He said was down right ludicrous. He did not mince his words when He said "Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me". Remember how many people turned away from Jesus until only the disciples remained. Jesus did not hood wink them, it was a take it or leave it deal. No coercion and no sales gimmick.
"For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear." 2 Timothy 4:3
So today by the grace of God and the Holy Spirit who grants all understanding I have come to terms with the issue of why bad things happening to Christian. The reason why this issue vexes me to such an extent is because I have been viewing life on earth as an eternal abode. It is so easy to forget about our everlasting home when we are so entrenched with earth's culture, values and systems. Thus why does it really matter when bad things happen or even when death knocks on your door. You should already know where you will be after life. Or don't you? Understanding this fact has put more weight in appreciating the fact that each day is a gift and we need be accountable for what little time our "lily in the fields" life has.

Sci-Fi Fantasy Genre

I have always been a fantasy book junkie. Among the list of my favourite writer/books are Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman for their dragonlance saga, Terry Brooks for his Shannara series, David Gemmell, RA Salvatore's dark elf series (I love this guy's books to bits) and loads of others whom I can't recall at the moment. Recently read my brothers Warcraft series which was pretty awesome as well.
This genre may not be anyone's cup of tea but it certainly rocks my socks. Which brings me to my point. I'm about to embark on a fantasy journey myself....... an epic tale of good versus evil. A poignant tale wrought with betrayal and conquest. Knights and dragons....ok you know the drill.
Thing is, I've always wanted to write my own story. I know it won't be a best seller in the New York times but what the heck anyway. So I thought what better way to make my literature known than to publish it in my own blog. I've inspired by a certain young dude by the name of Christopher Paolini who authored the Eragon series. You may well remember this book making it into the big screen. He started writing when he was like 14, 15? So if he can do it so can I. Heh.
I haven't got a name for the story yet. So if you guys/gals aren't into this, please don't bother reading. It'll bore you to death.
For those who do....hang on to your seat cos chapter one is coming out real soon. (Just as soon as I get it proof read and edited).

I absolutely hate wearing ties. Give me a placard and I'll gladly hang it around my neck. How much do I detest wearing a tie you ask me? It comes in 2nd place after "having a heavy millstone hung around my neck" (Mark 9:42). It feels like something / somebody is choking me the whole day long. Plus our country's sweltering heat does not make wearing this iconic fashion statement anymore endearing. Worst part is, most jobs require you to do so just because I quote "you need to potray the professional executive look". Well professional my @$$ because with the polar ice cap melting away, aren't we suppose to wear less and less these days? Geezz.... get with the times dudes. Someone ought to highlight this to HR and image consultants.

I'm just wondering which jackass came up with the fashion idea that men would look 'cool' with something hanging around their neck. It's just incredible that the tie never goes out of fashion. To make matters worse the ideal length of the tie worn should approximately end at the area where the belt is worn. Too short; you look like a retard. Too long; you look like dog on a leash. If you don't have the skill, you need to tie and untie until you get the ideal length desired. Oh and before that can happen you need to learn the technique of tieing a tie.

If I could have it my way I would ban this sorry excuse of an attire. I've come to understand that certain churches have banned wearing a tie. Their reasoning is because the end of the tie ends in the shape of an arrow pointing downwards towards the ground. It's implicitly telling you to go to hell. I couldn't agree more with this. More excuses are needed for us to be free from this ghastly apparel. Studies should be conducted on how wearing ties may affect your health in particular.

Here's an excuse at work if you do not want to wear a tie. Tell HR that a tie resembles a hangman's halter. Explain to them you are quite sure the gantung sampai mati noose in prison is tied the sameway. So everyday when I tie the tie around my neck, it just feels like I'm going to hang myself. That ought to do the trick.

Turns out yesterday was indeed a day to forget. What was supposed to be a nice get together dinner with some friends ended with me losing my bag. Want to know more? Read on as I narrate yesterday's events in chronological order.

6.30 pm - Deric called me to meet him at maxis centre. Proceeded to the KLCC lrt station and headed towards Kelana Jaya. Since it was still early, he decided to head home first. So we drove back to his crib to hang out and chill out first. Went online to check my mails/ facebook, check out his burgeoning Transformers collection, played "beat it" intro on his guitar and sampled 2 slices of his homemade cheese cake (nice!)
8.05pm - Left his place to pick up Merilyn and then shot off to Williams.
8.30pm - Reached Williams. Deric parked along the rows of shops opposite of Williams. I recalled putting my bag at the bottom of the dashboard compartment. Since it was black and did not contain a laptop, I doubted it would be of interest to any potential thieves. Boy was I wrong!
8.30pm - 11pm - Enjoyed my naan cheese + bacon with milo ice. Talked and joked with friends.
11.05pm - Went back to Deric's car which was locked. Found my bag missing. Brain took a while to process this really happened to me. After accepting the facts, mind started to recollect what was in the bag. Decided there was nothing of much importance, Deric sent Su Be back and then dropped me off at Kelana Jaya station.

Items gone with the wind

Black colour Blue Mountain laptop bag I bought from the now demolished Jaya Supermarket in PJ Section 14 about 2 years back. Think I got it quite cheap back then. Quite worn out already and the zippers were going to give way soon. Verdict: A worthless but hardy bag.
Toiletries bag which contained - body spray, hair tonic, Clear anti-dandruff shampoo, contact lense case, contact lense solution and spectacles. Verdict: My Lois glasses is the major loss here.
Bank ID and security tag. Verdict: This is going to cost me a bit to replace. Darn nam it.
Facial mask for H1N1 prevention. Verdict: Got it during the maxis building firedrill. Never used.

The telltale signs of ageing are already apparent. It is something that I tried to deny but the "signs" never lie. Here are the "signs".
1. My gf's housemate thought I was a 30 something guy when she first saw me. Ouch….I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry.
2. I was in the clinic few weeks back sitting down reading a magazine. Kids were moving around in between me and the table. Their mum said, "Stop moving back and forth! You are disturbing Uncle". Double ouch….I've officially reach a transition point from "Koh Koh" to Uncle. Please congratulate me.
3. Was in the dentist the other day, waiting for my gf. Another lady customer with kids was waiting for her husband. She smiled at me. (I thought she was making a pass at me). Not wanting to offend her, I smiled back.
I then wanted to go over to her place to get a magazine to read. She started to point at the toy house in front of her as she looked at me. I was quite perplexed from this point onwards. She then said, "your daughter in is there". Then it all started to make sense. Her kids was playing with another little girl which she mistook for my daughter. She thought I was going over to check up on my daughter!
I duly replied, "that's the dentist's daughter" to which she apologised. Must say I was more than a little peeved but I made sure it did not show on my face.
Triple ouch…….I'm old enough to pass off as someone's father.

I hate it when reality bites. Does it have to bite so hard? It hurts. Now I won't be surprised if someone gives up their seat for me in the lrt.

Have you ever wondered if God placed certain people you dislike/detest/abhor (stopping short of breaking the 6th commandment) in your life for a bigger purpose just like in Joseph's case. In Joseph's case he got sold off as a slave by his own brothers! I would certainly not be able to see God's purpose in such a circumstance. To add salt to injury his story did not end there as God put other people in his life to contend with. Among them were Potiphar's wife and the "kacang lupakan kulit" chief cupbearer. The many unaccounted years he spent in jail that the bible summarised in 1 verse! So laconically speaking, it wasn't until many years....many trials....many temptations....had passed before he finally saw God's purpose unfold.
Likewise I have my fair share of "Joseph brother's" (so to speak) in my own life. I want to thank God for everyone of them because looking back retrospectively they actually made me into a better person, a stronger person, a more confident person, a more hardworking person, a more careful person, a more patient person and the list goes on. I'm not a finished article as yet so I guess I'm bound to encounter more "Joseph brothers"?
On the other side of the coin, if I had been a "Joseph brother" to anyone I've met, I want to ask for your forgiveness. I'm pretty sure I've been an @$$ at times. Hopefully God has used me to make you a better person as well. For some reason you feel that I actually made you worse off I really want to get in touch with you. Write to me telling me how I have wronged you. Life is too short to hold grudges.
For those who are still suffering and have yet to see God's plan for you...just hang in there and don't give up. Take comfort and encouragement from the verse below

I guess I can't help but to echo the sentiments of the nation on the issue that has got us all "pumped" (forgive the pun) up and has "fueled" (forgive me again) our anger. Who in the right frame of mind can stomach the 41% increase let alone the abrupt nature of the announcement. Then again we can gripe all we want but still have to face up to the fact that we need to adjust our lifestyle to address this global concern. To rub salt to the wound, we are already experiencing the "butterfly effect" of rising food prices and electricity tariffs.
I believe this is just the tip of the iceberg. Without wanting to sound like a prophet of doom heralding further bad news I sincerely believe the worst is yet to come. Hence I'm doing all I can to prepare for the impact.
Considering our public transport is beyond redemption, I'm looking thinking of getting a bicycle. Let's see what are the benefits:
1. Saves money as it does not consume petrol (duh!)
2. Does not pollute the environment
3. A great form of exercise (Should not be done excessively esp. for guys that hope to be a father some day)
4. No parking charges
5. Can fit through small lanes where it is not accessible by car

Have you ever worn a dress that you think did not look nice on you? Then someone mentioned how fantastic it looked on you and your earlier negative perception instantaneously turned into a delightful glee. Maybe you might have written an essay during school which you personally felt was not your best effort. Lo and behold when you got back your essay paper, not only was the teacher generous with her marks but she added how well it was written and encouraged you to do better in the future. You then start to re-read the essay in a different light, believing that the essay you initially thought was mediocre was actually a quality piece of work.
My point is how much people’s words have an effect on us. It goes to show how much we tend to value what people think of us or even our work for that matter. We could be placing too much emphasis on how other people perceive us so much so how we perceive ourselves becomes relatively secondary. We might even crave for other people’s approval or encouragement just to have the sense of satisfaction or fulfillment. Therein the danger lurks.
What matters is definitely not what people think of us but rather what God thinks about us. We should ask ourselves, in all that we do are we seeking to please God or to please men. John 12:43 mentioned about the very trap the Pharisees feel into. “They loved praise from men more than praise from God”.
The reason I decided to write about this is because I recently took up a role in my cell group as a prayer secretary. Only upon carrying out the task required only did I realize what a tough job it was compiling the prayer needs and thanksgiving items of the cell member week in and week out. Constantly texting and calling the member to submit their prayer items. Patiently waiting for the reply which sometimes doesn’t even come. Training myself to faithfully pray for each of the members on a daily basis. Prayer logs have to be updated. Members have to be updated. Even the leaders have to be updated. After a few weeks, this role started to seem like a thankless job to me. The lethargy of routine work began to pervade my being. I slowly allowed myself to feel that the effort being put in is not recognized much less acknowledged by others.
A recent chance upon the verse above jolted me into realizing that the intention of my heart was wrong from the start. If I had been doing this for the Lord, I would never have felt this way to begin with. There wouldn’t be a need for men’s encouragement to fuel my work. The satisfaction I should get is that God is pleased with me and that is all that matters. I then began to realize that my reward from heaven above whereby moth and rust does not destroy.
This epiphany made me remember what my boss recently told me when we got good reviews from top management for the business plan we prepared. He said that if our work was done for God, there is no need for us to bask in the praises from management. Coming from a non-Christian boss, it puts me to shame how easily I have allowed myself to forget those words.
I also remembered what a wise friend once told me. Whenever he did something for someone, he did not expect anything in return. If he expected something in return, he’d rather not do it in the first place. I guess that is how it is with Jesus. When he gave up His life for us, it was an unconditional act of love. Jesus did not demand that we acknowledge him as Lord and saviour. It was a choice for us to freely make. Hence, the less I expect in return for whatever I do now, I’m actually getting more sense of satisfaction. It’s becoming a joy when I tell the Lord in the midst of working, “here Lord, this hands is working for you. Let it be a worship unto You”. The king of Sparta mentioned to his troops before going to war in 300 and I quote “ give them nothing; but take from them everything!”. Maybe for me, I would like to rephrase it as “give to the Lord everything but expect from men nothing”. Try it. It works! =)

Crazy period

I know I haven't been blogging diligently as I would have loved to. That's why I have a blogging policeman like Joash to remind me. Hahah.
So many things have been taking up my time such as....
i) more commitment in church and cell. (as my homie would put it: taking the matrix to light up the darkest hour)
ii) Had to finish off season 3&4 of the transformers. Finally got a closure in one part of my life
iii) Burdened with the ever looming exams that never ends. It reminds me of the "Never Ending Story" episodes I used to watch when young. Still trying to find the secret of getting past the 1st page without dozing off
iv) I'm just so plain lazy to blog. Hehe.

I think the last point sums it up. Until my inspiration comes again, after Liverpool lifts the European Cup for the 6th time, after I pass my exams etc...... then maybe I'll resume blogging.

I think the picture pretty much sums up how I looked when I found out that I failed my final ACCA paper for the 3rd time! If I had been playing baseball this would have been my last strike. If I was playing football, I would have been sent off a long long time ago.
I only have myself to blame. Souring on the wings of selfish pride I flew too high. Like Icarus I collide. (Jars of clay) Same old story of not putting in enough effort. It is just so darn frustrating. It's like pouring money down a rat hole. It's like rain on your wedding day. It's like good advice that I just didn't take (Alanis). Feels like dejavu all over again.
Now I will pick myself up from this morass of self pity. Pick myself up and try again. (Beyonce?)
Must try my best to pass this round before those dumb ass standard setters come up with more exposure drafts and impertinent standards. Enough is enough. I don't know how much more of this I can take. At times like this I know the one thing that will make me feel much much better. What I really need right now is 8 scoops of sticky chewy choco!

I’m not much of a resolution setter, a future goals strategist or even a visionary. It is not that I’m myopic (well I am technically speaking) or I don’t care too much about where my life’s direction is heading, rather I prefer to leave it to God.

However for this year, I do have in mind to accomplish certain goals by this year end. Among them is to have a body just like Brad Pitt. A well toned and lean physique is what I’m looking for. This picture was taken from his movie “Fight Club” in which he co-starred with Edward Norton. I just saw the movie yesterday.

Anyway I digress…..seeing that Chinese New Year is already behind me, I don’t see myself stuffing my pie hole thoughtlessly in these coming months. Hence if I maintain my diet plan and adhere strictly to my exercise regime, I should be able to flaunt my abs in no time. Heck, I’ll even post it on my blog. On second thoughts maybe not.

My diet plan should start just as soon as I finish this packet of fried “ubi kayu segar” marketed with the name “Spicy Plain” (What a dufus name btw). Just some remnants of the junk I brought back from the Chinese new year guilty gluttony break.

Is there anyone who thinks I won't be able to acheive this? or maybe I'll sizzle out mid-way? I would just love to prove you wrong.

There are many things in life I buy only to regret it later. From time to time there would be an exception that comes along. Buying this Yamaha APX700 made it into my limited exception list!
There is no gainsaying that this counts as one of my most worthwhile investment. It was worth every cent, every packet of maggi mee eaten, every strand of MSG induced hair loss.
Let me tell the story of how it all began......
A long time ago (+/-10 yrs ago), in a land far far away (melaka), a worship leader in my church youth fellowship had this series. Needless to say I feel in love with it the first time I saw it. I admit I am a sucker for the aesthetic aspects of a guitar. Good looks first, there rest is secondary.
After many prayer for forgiveness due to my covetousness, I'm finally a proud owner of my own Yamaha APX700. Hopefully this guitar will assist me in many songs to come, Amen. Who knows I might just be the next Marie Digby. Hehe. (who am I kidding) Maybe get endorsed by Yamaha?? Hmnn..... better not get carried away.
